Early Signs of Diabetic Retinal Damage in Young Patients

The Ophthalmologist has published an interesting article on early signs of diabetic retinal damage in young patients. A new OCT study in children and young people with type 1 diabetes suggests that neurodegenerative changes in the retina may occur before clinically visible diabetic retinopathy.

Higher HbA1c levels were associated with greater thinning of certain retinal layers, highlighting OCT as a potential tool for the early detection of subclinical changes. The findings are promising, but remain exploratory, and longer-term studies are needed to determine whether these early OCT changes can predict the development of diabetic retinopathy.
