Community Optometrist–Led Monitoring of Quiescent Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration

The study, conducted across 17 hospital centres and 60 community optometry practices in the UK, involved 704 patients and explored an important question: can patients with stable neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) be safely monitored by specially trained and accredited optometrists in community settings, rather than having to attend hospital-based ophthalmology clinics?

Monitoring was carried out using optical coherence tomography (OCT), with participating optometrists receiving dedicated training and accreditation.
